Unique Experience at Traditional Valletta Bakery

Traditional Valletta Bread BakeryThe newly appointed Minister for Tourism, Mario de Marco opened a new Maltese bakery in Valletta, being one of the projects that benefited from the €10 million Grant Scheme for Sustainable Tourism Projects.

The project is aimed at encouraging investment in businesses that improve the island as a tourist destination whilst also offering the business meetings and incentives delegates to enjoy the local culture. De Marco said that tourism works on three pillars, the third of which is product and businesses such as Nenu's Bakery in Valletta enhances the product of Malta.

"We need to continually invest in the tourism sector in Malta, and not simply in hotels and infrastructure, but also in the industries that take the tourists out of their hotels."

De Marco stressed the importance of creating a unique product that tourists, business and conference meeting delegates will not find in other countries. "There is nothing as good as a warm piece of Maltese bread straight out of the oven with some butter. This is the sort of experience we want to give to tourists to enable them to participate in the Maltese experience."

The bakery is owned by Nenu Debono, owner of Maypole Group in Qormi and is situated in a refurbished building with an original stone oven crucial for good quality Maltese bread.

Tourists as well as business and conference meeting delegates together with the locals can go to the bakery and sit down for a meal, of traditional ftria stuffed with a variety of ingredients or other traditional Maltese dishes. It is also possible to make your own bread, with dough and ingredients provided by the bakery.

"With the help of the EU and the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) we are able to provide a unique experience for tourists and locals to make their own bread and be part of a traditional culture" Debono said.
