It all started in Malta...

Friday 29th May sees the arrival in Malta of a team of dedicated British golfers, as part of a new pilot programme to serve the needs of more golfers in the UK and throughout the Mediterranean.

The initiative is the brainchild of Malta-based events management specialists Business Meetings Malta (BMM). The team comprises expert golf coaches from the James Andrews School of Golf in southeast England, local pro Henning Schultz and 2-time European Ryder Cup Team player Paul Way. The idea is to make available to golfers and would-be players in Malta some of the most effective golf coaching methods and resources currently available anywhere. For UK golfers, meanwhile, it offers the opportunity to get some intensive coaching while enjoying a welcome respite from the notorious British weather.

In October 2008 the James Andrews School brought a team of Sussex Junior golfers to Malta to compete with a team comprising locals as well as youngsters from Germany and Belgium. The national carrier Air Malta co-sponsored the event through their corporate social reponsability programme.  This was a key component of the youth event's success, as their assistance doubtless helped the parents of the British youngsters decide to allow their children to travel overseas and compete.

The event was such a success that the organizers decided to use their existing contacts to offer a network of residential golf schools for adult and corporate clients to other Air Malta destinations around the Mediterranean and Europe. The strategy is based on the fact that the sum of the partners' skills is greater than their individual strengths. IN other words, effective coaching meets desirable destinations meet affordable air travel meets proven logistical and organizational skills.

Theresa Delia is CEO of Business Meetings Malta and one of Malta's most passionate advocates of this kind of sporting / tourism project.

"Malta already has a growing reputation as an excellent conference and incentive travel destination," says Ms Delia enthusiastically. "Through our special relationships with the James Andrews School of Golf and organizations like Air Malta we can now deliver conference and leisure packages that nobody can match - either for content or value for money - at a number of destinations on the Air Malta network."

David Wicks is the head of the Sales and Marketing of the James Andrews School, as well as a Sussex Golfing Union official and as manager of the county's U14 squad was responsible for the Sussex Juniors' visit in 2008.

"While we're based in Sussex one of the positive factors of our teaching method is that it can be taught anywhere," explains James Andrews. "By using our contacts we've proved we can offer golf travel & coaching packages that nobody else can. We proved it on a competitive level last year and will grow the competition among youth teams all over Europe. But at all other levels we're able to make this work too. We've happened across a formula that will effectively re-invent this kind of sporting and leisure event throughout the EU."
