European Film Professionals Train in Malta Workshop
An information session about 'Filming in Malta' and how Malta is a prime location for European filmmakers, was held recently by Malta Film Commissioner, Peter Busuttil. 'Production Value', a seven-day residential workshop, was held in Malta in collaboration with Falkun Films. The workshop allowed participants to focus on the art and craft of scheduling and budgeting for complex feature films which involved working on the pre-preparations for six existing film projects resulting in the ultimate delivery of professional budgets and shooting schedules using programmes such as Movie Magic Budgeting 7 and Movie Magic Scheduling 5 software.
The workshop completed with plenary sessions dedicated to general topics related to Line Producing and Assistant-Directing, as well as case studies by the Seniors. As a European initiative, Production Value intends to pass on knowledge and know-how in scheduling and budgeting and beyond, from Seniors to Directors, Producers, Junior Line Producers and Junior Assistant-Directors, in a multicultural environment, thus contributing with an innovative approach to the improvement of the European film industry.
Present for this workshop were 32 film professionals from 18 European countries, mostly Assistant-Directors, Line Producers, Producers and Directors. These included the likes of Marco Valerio Pugini (TV series "Rome"), Stuart Renfrew ("Bridget Jones' Diary"), David A. Martinez ("Knight and Day"), Mathias Schwerbrock ("John Rabe") and Kaare Storemyr ("Kon-Tiki", shot last summer in Malta).
During the information session it was highlighted how international producers and high-calibre film directors have been coming to the Maltese islands for more than 50 years for a number of reasons.
Despite stiff competition from other film locations, Malta has provided support services to many foreign film companies for the production of feature films, commercials and TV series. Malta can boast of having over 100 feature films in a span of 86 years that have been shot in Malta either entirely or partially, with the earliest known film going back as far as 1925 with 'Sons of the Sea' directed by H. Bruce Woolfe and most recent 'World War Z' directed by Marc Forster.
More high calibre directors who have shot in Malta include Steven Spielberg, Roman Polanski, Robert Altman, Oliver Stone, Guy Ritchie, Robert Young, Ron Howard, Guy Hamilton, Alan Parker, Michael Anderson and Peter Yates, to name a few.
