Best International Mediterranean Port Award 2009

Valletta, capital city of Malta has won the Best International Mediterranean Port Award 2009. This was announced at the third edition of 'Premios Excellence En El Sector Cruceros', taking place in Malaga, Spain earlier this month. The event was hosted by Cruises News Media Group.

Winners in different categories were chosen by more than 5,000 passengers in a survey cruise

These are the only international awards for the cruise industry in Spain, which annually recognise the work of the companies, ports and destinations through the cruise customer opinion. Malta attracted 33,945 Spanish cruise passengers in 2009, a 69.3 per cent drop compared with 2008, when 110,512 visited Valletta. In 2007, there were 97,582 Spanish cruise passengers.

VISET chairman Anton Micallef said the prize was "a call sign for achievement as it is a wake-up call for constant vigilance".

Valletta was declared co-winner along with Venice, both ports obtaining the same number of points. Business Meetings Malta, the free conference venue company in Malta, see this as proof that Malta is achieving international status as an Incentive, business and leisure destination in the Mediterranean.
