Team Building Explained

Team WorkTeam Building events form an important part in the success of many businesses. Significantly all major businesses recognize the need to motivate their employees to work together as a team in order for them to progress and move forward. It is important that you understand exactly what makes a good team work and also how to ensure that the chosen team building event is effective in attaining your required goals.

The most important thing to take into consideration when looking at corporate team building events is that you all have the same goals and objectives. You must all pull the same rope together and give 100% committment in the same direction. Many of the best team building excercises focus on this point and stress the importance of having  all of the participants minds solely concentrated in this specific area.

Committment forms a crucial part to the team building process.  You need to commit to those in the team to move forward and to have accountability towards each other.  Football teams are considered as a good example of this principle.  In any winning football team it is not just about one player but about all eleven players working together, all relying on one another to achieve the same goal, to win.

It is to be noted that there are different stages one goes through before the selection of the team.   This stage is called Forming and this is where the selected participants get themselves organised by understanding their individual roles in the team. Consequently, this stage forms an important part in the preliminary team building process.

The next stage is called Storming  and this is where the team mates  may find themselves arguing and creating problems.  Many of the stronger personalities in the group start to show up in this stage.

The third stage is known  as the Norming.   This process is where the members of the group openly talk about issues and problems that may arise and how to iron out these issues.

Finally the last part is aptly called Performing  since it brings all the other  abovementioned stages together towards the achievement of  high levels of performance by all concerned. Once you have your team all pulling in the same direction you can measure the effectiveness of that team by looking at a number of different areas.

Measuring  Your  Team's  Effectiveness

Goals

What does your team actually want to achieve ?

Roles

Each member of the team needs to realise how they contribute towards  the overall aims and objectives of their team

Procedures

The manner in which the team actually works together .

Relationships

The way the individual participants co-operate and behave towards each other.   As also, how the leader manages to motivate  and keep the team together.

In conclusion, team building is all about motivation and effectiveness which is  done by  focusing  on the strengths within the group and eliminating weaknesses.   If  done correctly you should end up with a  team that understands each other's roles perfectly, that performs regularly to the highest standards and has mutual respect for one another.
